Rating: 3/5 stars
Review:
Allegra, an 11-year-old girl, who lives with her grandmothers and her father. Her mind is split into 3 parts and wants them to love each other more than her.
This book was overall not bad. I enjoyed this book and it was an easy, calm read. The story was easy to get into and the plot was well structured. This book is different from what I read before because it's more of a coming of age novel. It was a little flat though but from reading outside of my usual genres like romance and fantasy, I really enjoyed it. Also, the book is slow-paced and if you think of giving up don't because the ending is good.
The characters were really enjoyable to read. I haven't read many books with an 11-year-old being the main character in a YA novel. Allegra developed so much throughout this book and you can tell how much she wanted her family to get along. You can see how Allegra tries to get her voice heard and get her rights to how women should be treated fairly. There was Matilde who was the grandmother that Allegra lived with. She was strict and you can say that she didn't want Allegra to have too much fun. She didn't let her granddaughter go to the beach or spend the night at someone's house. Joy is the other grandmother and she is the opposite of Matilde. She is a happy person but she also helped Matilde's daughter get an abortion which I don't like about her. The good thing about her is that she helps women and their children run away from controlling, abusive men. Joy also had a son named Rick who is Allegra's father. He lives with Matilde and you will see why in the book. These three characters hurt Allegra not physically but mentally.
My disliked/ reasons why I gave this book 3 stars is because the story was a little flat. I also wish it explained what the setting was because it was hard to imagine what time it took place. You can kind of tell it took place in the 1900s but not clearly in my opinion. It wasn't my favorite read but I did enjoy it. This story was enjoyable though and I recommend you guys to read it if you like realistic fiction books.
