Again Again: Interview with Author

An interview with E. Lockhart about Again Again

About the book:
1. How did you come up with the story of Again Again
It’s a love story set in multiple universes, about a surreal summer during which a girl named Adelaide becomes head-spinningly infatuated with an elusive boy named Jack.

2. Which of the characters from Again Again are you the most similar to?
I wanted to write about how hard it has been, in my experience, to see the object of my affection
clearly. We view a person through constructs we have about our own identity and theirs,
through our fantasies, and through our pain. How can we love people truly when we can
hardly see them?

3. What was the hardest part to write in Again Again?
Multiple timelines are always super hard to write! And plot twists. Getting that ending to work took a lot of layering and planning.

4. What was your favorite part about writing Again Again
I love sharing my work with writer friends and getting their feedback. In the case of Again Again, I had three novelists whose work I really admire critique the book and help me get it where I wanted
it to go. Those conversations were really rich and encouraging.

5. Where can readers purchase Again Again?
Anywhere books are sold! During this time of sheltering at home, I hope people will
support their local independent bookshops, which are key parts of so many
communities. Try bookshop.org. Once there, do a search for your friendly neighborhood
bookstore. Then when you order, your purchase will be credited to the store, but shipped
from the store’s warehouse supplier.

About the Author:
1. If you won a prize for something, what would it be and why?
Red lipstick.

2. If a director wanted to make Again Again into a movie and wanted you to act in it, who
would you be and why?
I’d probably be Adelaide’s mom. I am old and the mom is quite a lot like me in a number of ways. But I’d rather play the witchy, eccentric set-design teacher.

3. What are some of your favorite tv shows and movies?
If you liked Again Again, you will love Russian Doll on Netflix. It is such an incredibly smart story, with a similar (but different) do-over premise.

4. If you could have dinner with any 3 people (fictional, real or dead), who would it be?
I eat dinner with my favorite people quite regularly, but I wouldn’t mind inviting over Samantha Irby.
She is the author of Wow. No Thank You, We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, etc. and I am
very grateful for how much she makes me laugh and think. Nora Ephron could come over, as
well. Even though she’s dead. And would Alison Bechdel come? She’s the author of Fun
Home. She might be shy, I think, somehow. But I’d be glad to have her.
5. What do you like to do when you are not writing? I’m a pretty good cook. If you come to my
dinner party with Irby, Ephron and Bechdel, I will make a killer fruit guacamole and an amazing
plum cake.
