Royal Decoy: An Interview with the Author

An Interview with Heather Frost about Royal Decoy

About the Book:
1.  How did you come up with the story of Royal Decoy?
I was actually working on a totally different project at the time, but I found myself thinking some “what if?” questions, which is often how I brainstorm new ideas. The two biggest questions that triggered this story were: 1) What if the main character of a story was the body double, and not the “important” person? 2) What if that someone was forced to be the decoy? Before I knew it, Clare’s story was falling into place. I ended up sidelining my other project so I could work on Royal Decoy, because when inspiration strikes, I’ve learned not to ignore it!

2.  Which POV (point-of-view) did you enjoy writing more about? Clare or Grayson and why?
I’d have to say Grayson. His voice was effortless to tap into, and his story just flowed, whereas Clare’s would take a little more work sometimes. I think I am also just a sucker for a tortured character, and Grayson is definitely that! The world sees him as this terrifying prince and enforcer of his father’s laws, and that definitely impacts the way Grayson sees himself. Plus, I loved writing his scenes with Mia. They have great chemistry!

3.  What part was the hardest to write? The beginning, middle, or the end?
Probably the beginning. It was a little tricky to figure out exactly where I wanted to start Clare’s story and to figure out that initial pacing.

4.  The cover is really gorgeous. How did you design it?
Thanks! I hired my sister, K.M. Frost to do the design. She did a gorgeous job! I love the model for Clare (and that dress!) and I think the play of shadows and light on the cover really helps captures the feel of the story.

About You:
1.    If you won a prize for something, what would it be and why?
I could probably win a prize for organization. I love to organize things – my house, my files, my books. And I adore spreadsheets. I moved recently, and I had several people look at me a little funny because everything was packed so precisely!

2.    If a director wanted to make Royal Decoy into a movie and wanted you to act in it, who would you be and why?
Oh dear, I’d be worried about my acting skills! But if I had to pick a part, I think a fun role to play would be Queen Iris, Grayson’s creepy mother. I’m a little young for her, but makeup does wonders, and it would be cool to be a villain! :)

3.    Describe yourself in 3 words.
 Dreamer. Kind. Bibliophile.

4.    If you could have dinner with any 3 people (fictional, real or dead), who would it be?
Wow, that’s a hard question! At the moment, I would love to have a conversation with J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling. They all wrote such iconic stories, and it would be fascinating to talk books with them.

5.    What are some of your favorite tv shows?
Psych, Friends, Sherlock, X-Files, Stranger Things, and Avatar the Last Airbender.
