Ghost Wood Song: Interview with the Author

An interview with Erica Waters about Ghost Wood Song

About the book:
1) How did you come up with the story of Ghost Wood Song?
While GHOST WOOD SONG’s inspiration came from several different sources, here’s the most interesting one: One day, I was upstairs writing in my attic office when I heard someone playing a banjo. We have a few banjos in our house, but I was the only one home. When I went downstairs, the music stopped. So that got me to thinking about a connection between ghosts and bluegrass instruments, and Shady’s ghost-raising fiddle was born!

2) Which of the characters from Ghost Wood Song are you the most similar to?
I’m probably most similar to Sarah, Shady’s banjo-playing crush. It’s hard for me to trust and open up to people, which can make me seem aloof and guarded. But, like Sarah, I do feel deeply and am committed to my friendships. I haven’t learned to play my banjo yet though!

3) What was the hardest part to write in Ghost Wood Song?
The trickiest part to write was the moment Shady realizes for sure who the killer is. It needed to feel like a logical progression, built up over the course of the book, so that it felt earned. Getting that balance right was incredibly challenging.

4) Did you already know who the killer was or was it a surprise for you too?
When I first started writing the book, I really wasn’t sure who killed Jim, but as the story progressed, a whole history took shape in my mind and I knew exactly who the killer needed to be, both for the sake of the story’s plot and its themes.

5) Where can readers purchase Ghost Wood Song
Readers can purchase a signed and personalized copy of GHOST WOOD SONG from my local indie bookstore, Parnassus Books: https://www.parnassusbooks.net/ericawaters
It’s also available at all the major retailers: https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062894229/ghost-wood-song/

About You:
1)   If you won a prize for something, what would it be and why?
Largest tea collection? My tea cabinet is out of control. :)

2)  If a director wanted to make Ghost Wood Song into a movie and wanted you to act in it, who would you be and why?
I’d play the role of Aunt Ena. I have a multitude of nieces and nephews, so I’ve got the aunt act down!

3)    What are some of your favorite tv shows and movies?
For me, TV and movies are mostly about comfort and familiarity. My favorites are the ones I want to watch when I’m sick or sad. For TV, I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Great British Bake Off, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. My favorite movies are You’ve Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping, and Amelie.

4)    If you could have dinner with any 3 people (fictional, real or dead), who would it be?
You know, most of the people I’m most fascinated by would probably terrify me in real life! But I think I’d enjoy sitting down with the musician Josh Ritter, Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings, and Orlando from my own book. I think the conversation would be very kind and chill and quietly beautiful.

5)    What do you like to do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing, I like to garden, go for walks in the woods, and turn over rocks to see what’s living under them. I also enjoy building terrariums and listening to the same albums over and over again. Oh, and I make really good soups.
