Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross interview
About the book:
1. How did you come up with the story of Sisters of Sword and Song?
The story originally came to me as two different ideas. I first saw a story idea that featured a scribe and a mage. I attempted to write it multiple times, but it continued to fizzle out, and I knew it was because I was lacking a stronger plot. I hoped to return to the idea, so I let it simmer on the backburner until it was ready. In the meantime, I had another idea rise to the surface, and this one was about two sisters--one who committed a crime and the other who volunteered to take part of the punishment. I eventually brought the sister story together with the mage and scribe story, and the book finally caught a spark, and I knew I had all the elements I needed to write it into a novel.
2. Which character are you the most similar to in Sisters of Sword and Song?
So I have a little bit of Halcyon in me, because I’m the oldest sister of six kids. I have her drive and her protectiveness. But overall, I am most like Evadne.
3. Which POV (point of view) did you enjoy writing more?
The very first draft of this book was actually Evadne’s POV only, written in first person. My editor made the suggestion for me to bring in Halcyon’s POV, and as soon as I did that and changed my writing to 3rd person, the story gained depth and fierceness. I honestly loved writing both of the sister’s POVs. Evadne’s chapters felt familiar and beloved to me, while Halcyon’s were exciting.
4. What was the hardest scene to write in Sisters of Sword and Song?
Hmm. There were a few scenes that were hard to write for a number of reasons, but I remember feeling very daunted and overwhelmed by the chapter featuring Halcyon’s trial.
5. Where can readers purchase Sisters of Sword and Song? (any book subscriptions, signed copies, special editions, etc):
I’m excited to say that Sisters of Sword & Song is going to be featured in several book subscription boxes (which I cannot reveal, but you might be able to guess if you follow these particular companies). I’m signing and personalizing all pre-orders placed through Good Choice Reading (visit their website for more info). I would love for readers to order Sisters of Sword & Song from their local independent bookstores, or from Barnes & Noble. It will also be available as an audiobook, which I am thrilled about!

6. Any upcoming books that you want readers to know about?
I can’t give too much away at the moment, but I do have more books coming. I’m hoping to share more details and news soon. :)
About You:
1. If you won a prize for something, what would it be and why?
If I’m being a bit whimsical, I’d win a prize for my hair, maybe? It’s thick and long and I could probably grow it as long as Rapunzel’s if I wanted. But if I’m being honest...maybe winning a prize for my writing one day? That would be a dream come true, and I hope that with every book I write, I grow my craft a little more.
2. If a director wanted to make Sisters of Sword and Song into a movie and wanted you to act in it, who would you be and why?
I’d love to do a cameo as one of the hoplites in Halcyon’s legion! I want to wear all the armor and carry a sword.
3. What are some of your favorite tv shows or movies?
Favorite TV shows are Game of Thrones, Outlander, Gilmore Girls, Younger & Schitt’s Creek. I love period dramas and fantasy, but I also love to laugh. Ever After is one of my favorite movies ever.
4. If you could have dinner with any 3 people (fictional, real or dead), who would it be?
Ahh, so hard to choose! Melina Marchetta would be one. She’s one of my favorite authors, and I would love to have the chance to sit down and chat with her. I’d also choose Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. And Emilia Clarke. I adore her.
